SportsBike Engineering

( also in the process I have found the lack of maintenance performed by the last owner/mechanic has paid its toll on the bush and bearings in the swingarm end of the dog bones.. it appeared it had never seen grease…)
I have set the suspension within the limits of its quality and its not too bad… ( the tyres seem to be the week point at the mo..
and wont be long away from correction.. a set of metezeler M3’s await fitting…
The next task is to design a full exhaust system.. but I need certain info to do this and that includes the cam info.. and it seems like its top secret.. every time you come to design systems the manufactures treat one of more parts of the cam info as if it was going to affect the worlds safety if they print it any where.. still I have the bike and if worst comes to worst I’ll measure the actual timing, lift and valve sizes in the bike..
The gearing is up for a change, It is a little sluggish off the line and as this is really a project to build a punchy single for tight twisty ranges we not looking for 185km/h top speed, as it is in standard gearing. I’ll gear it down for the 160 to 165km/h mark and this should get it off the line a little more respectfully….

The other mod that has to be done on a time limit is to raise the seat height.. as I am not a midget but also not a giant I tend to look a little crushed on it.. and the arse to foot peg relation has to be stretched.. It will also put me and my body weight in a better position.. and get my nuts slightly out of halms way from the gonad cruncher they built in to the tank..

Here it is… bog stock standard..( this pic was taken after the first modification) oh and a bloody awful stayintune muffler.

This project was spawn form the necessity of a second bike.. the duke 916 was off the road for a major birthday after hitting the 100,000 km, certain parts are taking way too long to arrive, and I have run out off ppl to borrow bikes from.. so I searched the net for suitable candidates .. not much for the dollars I had to spend… this came up locally and around my money.. ( I remember these from when they first appeared on the market ).. I have always been a fan of singles and it was time to have one to play with..(although I have done plenty of motards) so here it is…
First mod was to raise the rear ride height.. it was like a chopper ( slight exaggeration ) low rear end and rake angle that looked more at home on a virago..lol..

Any how I manufactured a new set of dog bones for the linkages to raise the tail by  20 to 25mm.. this has tipped the front in nicely and allows some trail braking with out upsetting the turn in…

Its been on my dyno and the plans are afoot to right the wrongs this engine is enduring at the mo…
The poxy dual carbie thing that hangs off the back of the motor is just nasty… and a proper twin carb setup is in the wings…

Some research will have to go in to the cam profiles that may eventually grace the head.. but for now the standard ones will have to do.. but may be the design of the exhaust will have to take this into consideration unless I want to make another system when the cams change… ummm  will consider that thought..
Those are the preliminary plans for now and as they come to fruition I’ll post the results.. and pics..
(Time gap of about 3 weeks)
Ok latest thing has been the measurement and drawings for the alloy seat frame..
I have also pushed the forks through by 6mm and that has certainly made another step of improvement for the turn in and the ability to hold a line through the courner, Seems to be driving the front tyre and actually letting it work… in stead of previously seeming to load the rear up on acceleration and driving wide out of a courner… the new single seat unit will raise my body weight more over the front so it may be a case that the forks might come back out once that mod is completed.. we will see….
(Time gap of about a week)
new tyres went on this week.. I fitted metzeler M3’s a great tyre and works well in our hot climate and copes with the wet well.. which this time of year we get a bit of as its our wet season.. They have stepped it up a notch on the speed of the steering and direction change. The profile of the tyre

has a nice rounded and neutral radius.. The old Dunlop crap had worn and at the best of times are not a high profile tyre.. very flat rear even when new..
